This record at least 89 years old First record by this orchestra The Coon Sanders Novelty Orchestra is better known as the Conn Sanders Nighthawks after becoming famous. Unlike others bands that used records and touring to spread their fame, the Coon Sanders Orchestra used radio almost exclusively beginning in 1922. A orchestra founded on the Kansas City style Jazz drummer Carlton Coon and Pianist Joe Sanders. I would describe the sound as somewhere between Paul Whiteman and The original Dixieland Jazz Band. The record has heavy wear but also as a very limited sound response compared to other Columbia records from the time. I offer this hypothesis. Early bands had drum sets that were notorious for making the recording needle over run its groove. So many recording companies would downright refuse to record with drums. Recoding was very time consuming and seldom had more room than 2 or three take of one song. The only way to try to capture a drum sound was to place the drums in the far end of a recording studio and deaden the recording needle buy using a thicker metal diaphragm used for military bands. I think Carl Coon insisted on playing his drums causing Columbias recording tech to use the less sensitive metal recording diaphragm. I guess on the last take he finally let the band record without his drum playing. I wonder if he was sad when Columbia only released this song minus his drum playing out of the four takes recorded that day. Title:Some Little Bird Label:Columbia ...
